When you start learning to read music, you’ll sound discover there are quite a few miscellaneous symbols in music that aren’t music notes. (Don’t confuse musical symbols with musical cymbals) Cymbals are those big round metal plates that are crashed together. Haha, just a quick music joke. Anyway, back to the serious business of helping you learn to read music. Here’s the first music symbol (we’ll cover one per post now)

 

Fermata Sometimes people refer to the fermata as a “bird’s eye” or a hold.  Any time you see a fermata over a note, it means to hold that note longer.  If you’re playing in a band or orchestra, you’ll have to hold that note out until the conductor cuts the group. A fermata looks like this:

 Remember, in a piece of sheet music you may be learning it will be small and over a note in the score.
