I already play the piano … and the tin whistle, and the harp and the mandolin and the banjo, but the violin is my favourite.

    How to Read Music Notes

It’s slow going, like learning to read another language. I’m still learning myself. Just keep doing it and you’ll improve. The rhythm is the hardest part. I’ve read things very very slowly to get the rhythmic idea and then sped it up from there. It takes a lot of patience. Also, I find learning a tune by ear is more effective and the tune sinks in further.

well, what i would do is go to your local music store and ask them to help you find a good book. it will take some time but you have to practice and take it slow, don’t try and learn everything at once :-)

Well, I would suggest that you go to a good music store and tell them that you don’t know how to read notes. Ask them for a good book that will show you all the notes. Then the rest, is up to you to memorize them. That’s all you can really do.

    How to Sight Read Music

I know what you mean… I’ve been playing the piano for about 10 years and I’m awful at sight reading. In my last year (yeah I know) I asked my teacher if I could improve my sight reading. She told me to play through a bunch of *simple* songs every day, not to try and tackle the harder songs. I did that for a while and it did help, even though I felt a little silly. I’m sure if I continued I’d be a lot better today!

it takes some time but you have to be able to memorize the notes on the staff and fingering/positions. i used to play the clarinet and i had the worst time looking at music and getting the rhythms even if i knew the notes, i had to hear someone else play it first!

Take piano lessons. You’ve been playing long enough that if you switch gears in your violin lessons to begin note reading, it’s going to seem “boring”. You’ll have to go back to the very basic beginner songs. But if you take some piano lessons to learn it, it’ll feel new and exciting and will seem to make more sense to be playing beginner music again. And it’s much easier to learn to read music at the piano than any other instrument.
