Well, I’ve been playing the tenor saxophone since September, but I began in a sort of unusual case. The book I was assigned (I’m taking band at school; just thought you should know) had the notes already written in for about half of the exercises and “songs” (I don’t know if you could really call them songs since most of them are only about eight measures long), so I got used to just looking at the letters or writing the notes in instead of reading the music. Now we’re beginning to move onto mostly sheet music, and I’m trying to cut that habit, but I’m still having trouble. And even though I can figure out what note to play with time (I have no trouble with rests or types of notes or other things, just what letter), I feel like I’m held back since most everyone else can read music better than me. Does anyone have any suggestions to help me learn to read music more quickly and fluently? I’d hate to have to quit band because of my disadvantage.
