How to Read Music
I learned most of my music theory from the “Concise Oxford Dictionary of Music.” Not easy reading, but the information is there.
Music is written as a graph; the y-axis is pitch, and the x-axis is duration.
Tab is written as fingerings for an instrument.
You will learn to read better if you write stuff down. It makes you think about it.
Learn How to Read Music Notes
With guitar, tabs and chords would help you out more than music notes. I’m going to be a typical pianist and emphasize that piano is probably one of the most effective ways to learn to read musical notation. Once you can play piano, your knowledge of music is waaaaay more in-depth than those people who have started on any other instrument. You’ll be able to play with both hands at the same time while reading two different staves in two different clefs! Then the knowledge you have from piano can easily be transferred over to guitar later.
The best thing you can do for yourself, whichever instrument you choose, is to get a teacher. If you try to teach yourself, you may be too easy on yourself and you won’t know how to level your progress correctly. A teacher is the ULTIMATE source of knowledge and motivation for beginners. Get a really cool, young teacher who knows his/her stuff.
