Hi, I started playing guitar a little over a year ago and I’m really starting to develop my skills now.
But I noticed the importance of reading sheet music and I feel that I need to learn how in order to progress as a musician.
So, I already know that the lines are EGBDF and the spaces are FACE.
I also know what the different notes look like (i.e. full notes, half notes, quarter notes, triplets, sixteenth notes, etc)
What I wanna know though is:
-What is the best way to learn to “sight read”?
-What are some good ways to practice note reading?
-How do you get to the point where you’re playing as you’re reading the music?
-How long does it take the average person to learn how to read music?

learn to read music
Hi.
I learned to read sheet music a while ago just in case it helped me play the guitar better but to be honest it was no help at all.
Nearly all guitar music books come in guitar tabliture nowadays and has become the standard format for guitarists. You will very rarely find guitar music in regular sheet.
A nice way to learn if you still want to go ahead is to convert tablature in sheet and learn it both ways. This way you have a comparison tho how the notes work compared to each other.
The time it will take to learn is purely dependent on your ability. Some learn faster than others.
My advice: Stick to tablature.
Learning to Read Music
Here we go!
I’m Sarah *shakes hand* been playing music for a while now. (8 years) Guitar + Piano.
What really SERIOUSLY helps? Downloading/buying easy peasy sheet music, just to practice sight reading over and over WITHOUT writing down any notes below them. Get the notes jammed into your head. TIGHT. And theory is important – learn about that too!! You can google a good site with some theory online.
Then, when you’ve practiced 2,001 times (not literally, but when it feels like you could read music BLINDFOLDED! (or with your eyes squinted) Then move on to the harder stuff. You can download sheet music in my source below. It’s a trading site. Make an account, request, give away. You can request from me(:
PRACTICE = PERFECTION! I know it’s cheesy/old and sounds dumb, BUT IT’S SO TRUE!
And also, playing the basic notes quickly really, really helps. I have been playing piano forever -just started guitar in January- and unlike that dude above me ^^ I understand guitar 100x better then my fellow classmates. Take some time, don’t be afraid to take it slow(:
It takes an average person about a good 2-4 months to slowly and unprofessionally “sight read”. It took me 2 years to sight read really quickly. But it depends on the instrument, the person and their ability to learn and remember.
