B X asked:

Right now I play guitar but can only read tabs. I’d like to learn to read music for guitar, and maybe so I can play some other instruments. The thing is I cannot read any music at all- and as for guitar I’m a beginner and self teaching. To learn to read music, should I just get some lessons, or is it possible to teach myself with relative ease?

    Learn How to Read Music

If you go to a music store, they usually have DVDs, CDs, and a few instruction booklets that teach you how to do it all yourself. Though, if you think you might have an easier time learning with a tutor, you can go to some music stores and ask them about lessons, the days and times instructors are available, and prices per lesson.

You can teach yourself (I did!) but it’s a good idea to learn in conjunction with an instrument that has a fixed scale – like a piano or a wind instrument – rather than a guitar, that way you can be sure that you’re hitting the note you’re supposed to hit.

Start with a classic learner’s workbook like “You Can Read Music”:
