Don’t listen to any of that “Just pick one up and start” bullcrap. That wont’ do anything for you. Music, just like everything else has base fundamentals that make things much easier to learn once you get them down.
I can’t play the guitar on a professional level by any means. I consider myself a beginner, but I can help you get started like I did:
This website is extremely handy and helpful with learning chords, and finding songs that you actually ENJOY playing to get you motivated (Who wants to learn folk songs from the 1800s? Everyone wants to be able to play their favorite radio hits.)
And don’t doubt anyone when they say that playing regularly makes a difference. I try to play about thirty minutes to an hour every day after work, and it helps.

Get yourself a book to teach yourself. Make sure it has tuning notes on a CD so you’re teaching yourself right. I did this for about a month and I now play bass guitar in a band and can play basic chords… it’s worth the investment, believe me.
For starters, get yourself a cheap guitar, in case you don’t like it. Learn the basics, and if you like it invest in a better guitar!
As you can read music already, you’ll probably find that a beginner’s book will patronise you, so find chords on the internet and print them off (with the fingerings). If you have them on your music stand while you play the Beatles chords, you’re teaching yourself to read the chords.
When you’ve got more practise, take away the chord fingerings and just read the chords and play them.
AND to read chords (eg. G7) you have a G chord, which is G, B, D. Because there is a 7 in the chord symbol, you play a flattened 7th note of the scale (the leading note), which in the key of G major is an Fsharp, but you have to flatten it a semitone, so it’s an F, so you end up playing G B D Fnatural at once.
That’s how to read chord symbols! If you play keyboard, you’ll understand this already…

I thought myself how to play guitar and i am thirteen i can already play almost every jonas brother song and others! I learned by ear tho, which means i would just hear a song then sit down and go through all the strings until i learned it. But i wanted to learn how to read notes and play the real way so i went to and it has videos that teacher you how to play, and a note chart that has all the chords and teaches you where your fingers go and everything Its Great! I suggest you go there. Good Luck and ROCK ON! LOL
