John L asked:

i play the guitar and want to major in music as most musicians have but i cant read sheet music ive been playing for 6 years and i am very good i guess (better than most local bands i hear at shows ive gone to) so getting better is not a problem, but my problem is my brain just rejects all the sheet music i learn lol but i learn all my music by tabs.

i really dont feel like learning sheet music just want to become successful and got to college will they still except me?

even if i would have to learn how to read music to go to college is it too late cuz im goin to be a senior in high school and next september ill be goin to college?

Learn How to Read Music Notes

To major in music yes you will have to learn sheet music. It’s important to understand what exactly a music major entials before you get into it. One of your most basic classes will be music theory no matter which college you go to. In this class you will have to master a treble, alto, and bass cleft. Then you will discuss things that are far deeper than tabs. For example, the number of steps between notes. Are A and A# a full step or a half step apart? Stuff like that. You will also discuss of course musical theory and you will compare the different scales. It is incredibly hard and only for serious musicians. My mother took a basic music theory class and had to compose a symphony for the university band. So you will not only have to read music but you will also have to write it. But don’t worry you can probably learn to read music this summer. Its not too bad it just takes persistence.
