J_man asked:

Hi, I’m a grade 4 pianist and I never really learned to sight read, I used to just write the alphabets of each notes next to the notes and just play them as I go along, however, as I start playing some more advanced music, I realize I just couldn’t keep up with the shifting octaves and the alphabets, it was then I realized that’s a bad habit I have to change.
So can anyone give me some tips on how to quickly learn sight reading?

Go over old pieces of yours that you would need to relearn using the notes (make sure you erase any letters)

Go to any store that sells sheet music and piano books (or an online music store) and ask for sight reading books. There is a good series called 4-star sight reading. These books have hundreds of short (usually 4-8 bars long) pieces that are great for practicing sight reading.

    Tips for sight reading:
-always look at the key signature and time signature before you start
-scan over the piece for accidentals
-count the first few bars in your head
-look at phrasing, slurs, and ties
-don’t start to fast- look for the fastest part of the piece (usually 8th or 16th notes) and make sure you start at a tempo that will allow you to play the fastest or most difficult part

Warren is giving you excellent advice. Let me add that when it comes to sight reading, we are all not born equal. Some of us have brains that are tweaked in that direction while others like me will never be able to take an advance piece of music and read through it at tempo.

Over the years my reading has improved a 1000% but I still consider myself a very poor sight reader.

You need to understand everything that is written on the page like the notes, counting, fingering, because when you are sight reading you will not have time to figure out what note or what finger plays what note. Study the music before trying to sight read it. Also, you need to move around on the piano without looking at your hands, you will not have time to look down at you hands and then find your place again on the page. This will not happen overnight, so prepare yourself for the long haul.

Follow Warren’s advice, he hits upon all the major points of sight reading and if you put some serious time practicing sight reading, you will improve.

    Good Luck

All the things the people have said before are correct and will definitely help you sight read efficiently. But the way that let me personally become a good sight reader was just practicing easy music that you don’t remember or haven’t played before. Once you use all the strategies mentioned by others on music thats a little easy, progress the difficulty level. Basically, I just did a lot of sight reading practice. That’s what helped me.
