The same techniques that work for children work the same as an adult. First, learn what notes are the lines and spaces on the treble clef. Also learn what fingerings correspond to what notes on the clef. Then learn about articulations (slurs, tonguing, accents, staccato, etc), dynamics and such. Go buy a book like Essential Elements or Standards of Excellence. They work well for anyone and are step-by-step.
