GO TO: www.andrewwasson.com Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question… Q: First off, I’d like to state that, I am a decent guitarist with 16 years experience on guitar. I just watched your video on Constructing Chords on the Guitar Neck where you had mentioned that music reading is an important element for learning fret-board notes and music’s various rhythms! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve tried to discipline myself to begin learning to read music on the guitar. And, in the end, I have always abandoned it. I’ve purchased books like; the Hal Leonard Guitar Method Book 1, Classical Guitar for Beginners, and another one called Play Guitar Today. These books were so dumb and boring that I just could not find any motivation to study from them. My question would be; Is it possible for a somewhat established player to actually go backwards and learn a fundamental rudiment like music reading? And, have you got any music reading study tips. Thanks BTW – for your incredible guitar lessons! Bill, Rhode Island – USA A: When it comes to learning music reading I think it can be summed up with three points… #1. Make a decision that you are going to learn to read — and stick to it through thick and thin. #2. Realize that most of the books out there are not great, and only a few will work as good supplements to …

Great Videos Andrew!!! I own a guitar studio in Arlington Tx and one book I find excellent for teaching sightreading Is “Music Reading” by David Oakes published by Musician’s Institute – It teaches 5th position, open position and then 12th position with great songs like Fur Elise, Canon in D etc.
Learn How to Read Music
@johnosstreeter Ok, my bad, you are correct I guess it’s just important and interesting to a music nerd like me. And helpful for those who don’t have talent and need the theory to create and understand how to create music. The Reading is helpful for those who don’t have talent and is also interesting to a music nerd like me, to be able to identify something that I have never heard in my life. And again, sorry for my incorrect statement.

@MrBossdr880 i agree to some parts, yes its important if you go to be a professor in music or have to deal with other musicians you dont know, then it can be i language. but even when i know some theory i never use it. and i am very serious about music. i dont get the next level part. the next level of what?
i guess it depends on style too. but dont tell me i make better music but using theory. i can play something for you that would take me longer to explain than show. therefore i show.

Great teaching here!
learning to read music
@johnosstreeter It important if you are SERIOUS about music. For example lets say you want to go to college for something in music, or want to become a qualified guitar or music professor, therefore it is essential, IF you are SERIOUS about it. And yes, you don’t need theory to create? good music. You can still hear and feel music without theory. But if you are serious about it, I think you would go to the next level and learn reading and theory, then it becomes an important part of you.

@yootesa1515 He means “sharp” and “flat” notes. But, an accidental is a note that is not in the scale that you are using. So, it would probably be written with a “sharp” or “flat” on the music.

@johnosstreeter WOW!
After Reading your comment and visiting your YT homepage, I can tell the following things:
1). That you, FOR SURE, have “NO CLUE” how to read music.
2). Your taste in music SUCKS balls (Death metal SHIT Crap garbage).
3). You very likely Suck at Music & Guitar in general, (Steve Vai is fuckin’ GOD F.U.).
4). Your a MASSIVE Looooooooser !!!!

learning to read music
@boblawblaws604 i didnt say i could not read music. you dont need theory to create music and good music even. you can still hear and feel music without theory and you can still construct melodies and progressions without knowing their names. and steve vai never impressed me or anyone i know. hes in the guitar wank department. he cant write for shit imo. the benfits of anything is personal, it may help you if your stuck but its not important.

@johnosstreeter … When you learn to sight-read, (to a high degree of skill), you can hear and feel music in a COMPLETELY different way. The connection to the fingerboard is also drastically improved. Note locations are so concrete and you quickly see multiple possibilities – on a dime. Just think, would Steve Vai (or any of those guys) be the player he is today if he couldn’t sight-read? I doubt it… I very highly doubt it. You unfortunately won’t know the benefits until you learn to read!

Jason/SJ here. I can’t stress enough how awesome this is.You answered a question of mine and mentioned I should start learning how to read music. I read music in high school when I played trumpet and it’s coming back to me. Every Good Boy Does Fine. FACE. Yeeehawww!
Quick question, what software are you using that shows the fretboard and allows you to put dots on it or the letters for the notes? I would love to use this tool at home and use it to print stuff out for practice!
