PluckandPlayGuitar has free video based lessons for absolute beginners and assume you know nothing or close to nothing.

It takes you step by step through the basic guitar chords one by one. There’s also lessons on guitar scales, techniques and some easy songs to play.

I signed up with. It has a monthly membership and you can use paypal to pay and instruct paypal when you want to discontinue – very easy. Monthly fee is only $14 and less if you like it and sign up for more months. It has an excellent Core Learning System. After going over the basics it introduces you to the intervals and C Major Scale. And it has a song list where the instructors break down songs and show you how to play them. Check it out. I also got a DVD for under $10 on Ebay called Easy Beginners Acoustic Guitar which is excellent. Guitar Tricks has a free membership which allows you to try 24 free lessons you an idea about their instructional method, instructors, and the quality of the web site. They have a toll free number for questions and support too. Good luck.

    Not free… but cheap.

This is absolutely, IMO, the best online source to learn how to play guitar, as they have over 35 teachers who each have their own style, they are cheap but have high quality videos, and great support.

They teach you many genres and have many different songs to choose from. Best of all they start you from the absolute beginning if you need it. I LOVE this site.
