Anrita asked:
I’ve decided to, over the years, eventually learn to play the flute, piano and guitar.
Would it be better to start by learning the basics of reading music/etc, or just start with an instrument(I’m assuming you learn music reading as well, although not as thoroughly in the beginning)? If the latter, which instrument?

How Long Does it Take to Learn How to Read Music?
You can do it for yourself but it requires a lot of dedication on your part. Once you get to know the instrument you can make the tunes with no problem. But if you are planning on reading notes and learn the fine techniques I would reccomend a teacher and learn from him.
Learn How to Read Music
piano is a good one to start with, as you start to learn, you will learn to read music at the same time and a lot of basic music theory.
Learning to Read Music
I love music, And I’ve learned to play guitar by myself. I really don’t know how to read notes but i can play guitar. Maybe if there’s an opportunity, why not learn first the basics? it’s a good way to start.

learn to read music
I am a 53 year old musician. I started “playing” piano when I was 4! I had piano lessons from about age 6-10. I never learned to read music well. I took up guitar (acoustic) at age 14. Wrote my first song at age 15. Played in a gazillion bands from age 16-35!! Recorded two singles and two albums by 1989 — performed on many stages in many US cities. Still play, sing, write, record. There is no “correct” way to begin exploring music. Playing by “ear,” which is what I do, is essential, in my opinion, to forming a musical sensibility. If you wish to learn music, do so. But follow whatever seems to work for you! We are all different.
GOOD LUCK!!!
