Of course, learning tabs is easier, and, for a beginner, one can get to playing songs much faster.
But the advantage of learning music theory, notes and sight reading is that one can, then, pick up ANY piece of music and begin playing. With only learning tabs, one can ONLY play the pieces one has created tabs for. Not every song, even popular ones has tabs made for it.
So, a lot depend on what you want to do with your guitar. Tabs let you copy what someone else has done. Learing to read music lets you play everything EVER written, and, to create original music of your own.
I’m not saying that note reading is for everyone. If you just want to play songs, tabs, and strumming chords is a LOT of fun. But note reading is for serious musicians and for those who, eventually, want to make a career out of it.
Learning to Read Music
I have been playing guitar for 15 years, and it is defiantly easier to play off of tabs, but eventually you will want to learn to read music. Tabs just gives you what to play. Music gives you time signatures. Speeds at which to play the corresponding notes, and a bunch of other things as well. It will take a while to get used to reading music though so start practicing. If you would like to learn more about music theory specifically for guitar. I would recommend going to a book store, and picking up a book call “The Guitar Handbook”. Not sure who the author is, but it has a blue cover with 3 guitars on the front. GREAT book.

Reading tab is much easier, but you will not learn the timing of the songs without the notes. You will pretty much just be using the force and doing it by ear for how long to hold a chord, and there are so many messy incorrect tabs out there that will teach you nothing.
