elie101_forever asked:
I’ve never played a insturment before (unless you count the recorder) and I can not read music at all. I just plain out can’t read sheet music and I dont even know any of the notes. But I want my uncle to teach me to play the drums.
My friend is starting a band. Since I’ve always wanted to play drums I thought if I learned now I could try out for her band. Would I not be able to join a band if I can’t read music? And is it hard to learn the drums?

Hahahahahahahahahahahahah!!! Drummers can’t read the date, let alone music!!! You ask a drummer what stave line a middle C is on, and he’ll say “red.”
Just learn how to hit people really hard, in time to a song. That’s all you need. Don’t get worried by the fact that you need to know about hemi-demi-semi-quavers and 2+4 beats and offbeat-onbeat patterns, and flam triplets and rim-hits. Nothing to worry about.

I hate to tell ya. but yes you do have to know how to read music. But it truly isn’t that hard to learn. Just go to your local music store like WestMusic or something and take lessons. GOOD LUCK!

No, you don’t have to read music to play drums…They have Tabs for drums but they are quite few and far between..I think most drummers just learn by listening and playing

Come-on Elie. Don’t take the “easy way out.” Later, you will
be saying. ” I want a “good paying” job, that doesn’t “require
any math.” So get on the horn, and have a blast.

First of all, middle C is located on the first leger line below the staff in treble clef. Yes, I’m a drummer, and no, I didn’t have to Google ‘middle C’.
I’m a classically trained percussionist, but I specialize in drumset. First of all, you HAVE to learn how to read music. How would you feel if you were directing a play and you had an actor that demanded that you give him a tape recording of the entire play so he could take it home and listen to it over and over and over again just to could memorize his by ear before the first rehearsal…all because he’s illiterate? That’s how I would feel if I hired a ‘musically illiterate’ musician. being able to write a chart or to read one that someone else has written is an invaluable tool for a drummer to possess.
Luckily for you, learning to read music is very, very easy. If you understand simple fractions, then you ca read music…simple as that. All you have to do is learn what a few symbols mean, and the symbols are very easy to learn. They follow a system that has been perfected over hundreds of years for simplicity and ease of learning. Hell, I knew how to read music at a very good level when I was nine years old. Also, you don’t have to know what hemi-demi-semi quavers are unless you live in the UK, because they use an ungodly screwed up system for note naming. In America, we would simply call it a ’64th note’.
In response to your question about ‘are drums hard to learn’. The answer to that is not a simple one. They are relatively easy to learn, but nearly impossible to master. The thing that the best drummers in the world practice isn’t playing fast, complicated patterns. They focus on playing easy patterns, and playing them PERFECTLY.
You should spend a lot of time listening to great drummers and how they play things. Start learning about studio drummers and who they’ve played with and on what recordings…these are the best drummers in the world, and you’ve probably never heard of them. Here’s a short list to get you started:
Steve Gadd, Josh Freese, Vinnie Calaiuta, John “J.R.” Robinson, Hal Blaine, Omar Hakim, Gregg Bissonette (my personal idol), Cindy Blackman, John Blackwell, David Garibaldi, Rick Latham, Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson, Dave Weckl, etc.
You may be wondering, “If these people are so great, how come I’ve never heard them?”…oh…you have.
John Robinson, for instance has played for:
Barbara Streisand, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Frank Sinatra, Julio Iglesias, Kenny Loggins, Lionel Richie, Mariah Carey, Rod Stewart and The Temptations to name just a few.
Gregg Bissonette has played with:
The Ringo Starr All-Star Band, Maynard Ferguson, David Lee Roth, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai (of White Snake), Santana (you know “Supernatural”? With the Rob Thomas song? That was him…), Spinal Tap (no joke), The Kottonmouth Kings, Duran Duran, and many, many others.
Look up some of these guys on
They should be your inspiration. They are the best drummers in the world.
And they ALL know how to read music.
Good luck, and happy drumming!

Okay; playing drums, particularly to the rock genre is extremely easy once you master keeping beat with your right hand on what is called the hi-hat. If you really want to, go for it. No, you do not need to be able to read sheet music, & frankly it really wouldn’t help you. You see, drum sheet music &, say, guitar sheet music are entirely different; Guitar sheet music can be transferred to a piano, organ, flute, whatever. Drum sheet music cannot. But take my word for it; 9\10 drummers can’t read sheet. There have been & are very, very famous drummers who can’t read sheet. The main thing if you want to learn drums is the same thing for everything: Practice, practice, practice! The hardest is the first 24 hours of playing. It gets easier; trust me. I hope that answered your question.
