Should I learn to read music and play chords or should I just jump in and start to learn to play songs?

theres two different ways to start.
one, you can just learn to play tabs which dont require you to learn how to read notes off the staff or play chords.
two, you can actually sit down to learn notes and chords to play a large variety of music. once you get the simple chords like D, C, G, E, A, you can play almost everything basic atleast.
in my opinion, tabs are fun at first and you can show off but chords are better for future purposes.

The absolute best way is to take lessons with a good teacher, who will make sure you learn everything you need to be a good musician — how to read music, and how to read tab, and how to play by ear; how to play chords and create your own rhythm accompaniments, how to play scales and use them to improvise your own lead solos, and how to play songs.

You can’t just “jump in and start to learn to play songs” unless you also learn chords. Tabs will only give you the intros and solos for the songs. If all you can do is pick out the intro and the guitar solo in the middle, you don’t know the song. In order to play the entire song from beginning to end, you need to also be able to play the chords to the song, in the correct rhythm pattern to accompany the singing of the song (either your singing or someone else’s). So you MUST learn chords in order to be able to play guitar.

You don’t necessarily HAVE to be able to read music, but if you can, you give yourself access to thousands of pieces of music written over the last 4 centuries, as well as the ability to communicate with other musicians clearly and unambiguously. Why would you NOT want to do this?

dude, just grab your guitar, listen to your fav bands/musicians, know the songs in your head, and get the tabs. if u just play ANYTHING on guitar for long enough, you’ll learn the sounds, and be able to match notes you hear to where they are on the guitar neck. just PLAY and dont give up! countless ppl have taught themselves this way…
