Caroline asked:

I need a thorough, explanatory answer on this. Best anwer will be one that answers my question.

I know how to read which note is which on the sheet music, and I know the notes on the fretboard. My question: How do you know WHICH “A” to play? I can identify an A on the staff, but how do I know which A that is on the guitar? (There are multiples all down the fretboard.) I’ve heard something about determining which key the music is in (key of G, etc.) but what is each key on the guitar? Is it a certain set of frets that you use? And how do you know whether to play the note on the 1st or 6th string, since they’re the same?

I hope this makes sense, and I hope somebody can me make sense of it! Thanks everyone!

Well I dont play guitar, but I do play other instruments. And on other instrument’s sheet music, The higher the note is on the lines, the higher note is what you play. Its kind of hard to explain.

Caroline, for the moment, it doesn’t really matter which A you use, just keep practicing. when next you’re in town walk into the local musical instrument store and ask the nice man in there to show you, he’ll be only too happy. It’s hard to explain in writing what to do, you really need to be shown. Your music teacher at school should be able to show you, otherwise just phone the music store and ask them which fret goes with that A. I can give you the name of a perfect book though. It’ll tell you everything you need to know: PROGRESSIVE RHYTHM GUITAR or PROGRESSIVE LEAD GUITAR. (You didn’t mention what you were trying to do) These books have everything you need to know, pictures, drawings, charts, how to read, everything I promise. Good luck. Cat.
