Melissa D asked:

I tried when I was a teenager and took lessons but I just never really went anywhere with it, but I really want to play electric guitar just because I love rock and metal music and I have always had a love for music..but I dont understand how to read music. it doesnt make sense to me and lessons are expensive and im in my 20′s and I know it takes a long time to get good. should I just let it go? or do you think I should try?

Its not something you can just jump into and expect to learn over night. If you really want to learn you will spend hours praticing like me. If you really want to learn you will. It’s all up to you.

I learned as an early teen and it took a couple of years for me to get “good”. I enlisted in the Navy four years ago at the ripe age of 27 and didn’t play for almost 4 years. I recently decided to start playing again and I am reteaching myself. I just learned the intro to Megadeth’s Tornado of Souls and was shocked I could do it. I couldn’t play it before and tried to learn twice.
The point of the story is that if you are willing to put forth the effort you will learn and excel. Attitude Determines Aptitude

If you really want it you’ll be willing to put the time into it. If you didn’t understand it when you first took lessons, or like you said it didn’t make sense to you, you didn’t have a very good teacher, why not try again or take lessons off the Internet or get one of the Cd’s or DVDs that they have out on the market today. Why not give yourself two years starting from the beginning and see how you do. Try some off these :
Hope this helped, good luck, bye.

You don’t have to be able to read music to play rock guitar, you can use tablature:

It’s fun to play guitar and it doesn’t matter what age you start, unless you have dreams of playing professionally.

My son and his step brother both got guitars and started lessons at the same time. My son decided that he really wasn’t that interested and so he didn’t really learn that much and eventually stopped going to lessons. His step brother however loved it and you should hear him now. He has his own band and does a few live performances in Austin TX. Cool huh. My point is if you want something you will do what it takes to get it if you don’t you won’t.
