what? asked:

I know a little about music notes and stuff like 8th notes and whole notes and that a whole note gets four beats, but I dont know enough. I hear people sing and they know exactly how to sing the music by looking at the notes, how do they know this, is it because of where the notes are located on the staff like if theres a note on the C or the D, is that how they know what to sing? I’d really appreciate it so much if someone could help me out a little, I really love music, and I’d love to learn more about it, but I can’t afford any lessons or anything so I’m trying to learn myself, and I obviously need some help. I’d like for someone to explain basically when you see a piece of music how do you know how do you know how to sing it?

There is a tone for each line on the five line staff. If a note is too high to be plced on the staff, there will be more smaller line called leger lines to signalfy the note.

Each line and space is a different note. And can change slightly by the sharps or flats located on it.

The middle line on the treble cleff is a B. and you can count up and down from there. The higher the not is on the staff, the higher you have to sing, the lower it is, the lower you have to sing.

Rythum: A empty note that has no stem is a whole note (4 beats in 4/4 time)
A empty note that has a stem is a half note ( 2beats in 4/4 time)
A filled in note with a stem in a quater note ( 1 beat in 4/4 time)
A filled note that has a flag at the end of the stem is a eigth note (half of a quarter note)

Those are the basics, however I suggest you take some lessons. O_O It’s not something you can read off the internet.

You may want to invest in a book on some kind of music theory. Try “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Music Theory” or “Learn to Read Music” by Howard Shanet both available on amazon.com. Also…some time in the future you can get a small inexpensive keyboard and a self learning piano book, preferably one with DVD instruction. You may be surprised what you can teach yourself. I’m pretty sure you can learn the basics on on your own.

    Good luck. : )
