A?????? asked:

I posted this in another section, but I decided to post it here too because I’m sure there are a lot of Adolescents who are musicians.

Well first off I am in love with the piano. I can play a little by ear and I can teach myself to play most songs using online lessons in a minimal amount of time. I’m going to start taking professional lessons soon, but first I have to learn to read music.

I can sort of read music, but not entirely. How can I teach myself to read music? I’m not sure where to start.

Thanks :D

You can only learn by practice. To be honest you should simply start taking the lessons – otherwise it’s going to be something you just put off indefinitely because you never quite read music well enough… most people who start piano can’t read music beforehand, because it’s often the first instrument they play.

You have to memorize what each key on the piano is. Buy some beginner books, they do actually help. It is all with repetition.

It will take a while but soon it will come naturally, you just need lots of practice.

I’m sure there are some really helpful websites if you just do a web search “beginner piano lessons” or something and you can get some great online help. You can also at first start with the five keys to the write of middle c. From there, you can learn ode to joy and mary had a little lamb just by recognizing the keys by their number (1-5). For example without the note names ode to joy is 3,3,4,5,5,4,3,2,1,1,2,3,3,2,2 or at least that is the chorus, the really famous part.
