I play the piano, but know very little about reading music. I want to be able to play the really complicated classical pieces, which I know takes years of practice and dedication. I need a true pianist for this question. If I start learning to play by ONLY reading the sheet music, will progressive lessons get me to the point that I can play the Beethoven and Bach?

I need a true pianist for this question. If I start learning to play by ONLY reading the sheet music, will progressive lessons get me to the point that I can play the Beethoven and Bach? I can already read music, but I’m limited. I took lessons as a kid and I remember alot of what I learned, but the way I play, I can read what I play on the treble clef but make up my own rhythms on the bass clef. I want to know if formal lessons will help me to look at a complicated piece of music and be able to play it at first glance.

Learning to Read Music
Yes. But you have a very difficult task ahead of you. You have learned to play piano “by ear”. It means without the benefit of learning how to read music. “By ear” is fun and entertaining but if you want to be serious about the piano you MUST know how to read and transpose music. Not band leader, orchestra leader or conductor will ever use a ‘by ear’ player. So you have to get yourself a good teacher and begin lessons. It will be hard for you because you will start with the basics which will bore you to death because your playing (not knowledge) is beyond the basics. Since you do have talent, you will probably need at least a year of good lessons before your ready to mix what you learned with what you can do. Good Luck.
Sight Reading Music
To be able to play really complicated classical pieces, you will need to be able to read music, so getting some piano lessons would be very beneficial. Formal lessons will help you read music, and also help you play the music well, however, only with practice, and lots of practice, will you be able to play advanced music at first glance.
i hope this helps.
