B X asked:
This might be a dumb question, but I have no idea how to go about learning to read music. I’ve heard things like you read music differently for each instrument and I’m very confused. I’d also like to really understand music, maybe get into music theory, but I’m starting from nothing here.

Learn How to Read Music
When you learn how to play an instrument, reading music is part of the course. When reading piano music, it is easiest to read the notes from the bottom upwards.
It helps your’ sight reading’ by playing all kinds of music in different keys.
In piano music. the “C’ is between the treble and bass staff. This is your ‘anchor’. Other instruments have their ‘anchor’ at different places of the stave.
It takes lots and lots of time!

How to Sight Read Music
Go to a local college and enroll in a Music Theory class. This can be a little costly, but is great if you want to get yourself into the basics and deep understanding of music. If you just want to know the basics, what I suggest is finding a piano teacher. They can help you to start slowly and understand the keyboard. Through this you will understand the note names, time values, clefs, and time signatures. These are all very basic things. It really depends what type of knowledge you want. If you want the basic information while learning an instrument with a cheaper price, then find a local piano teacher. If you are near a location that offers a college with Music Theory classes, enroll and you will no doubt get a great understanding of music. Note, Music Theory is not easy, but is priceless as a musician.

My suggestion depends on how you learn. I learned to read music just by playing simple songs on the piano based on what I knew. It just grew from there. You could also try finding a basic music theory book or course, or look up music theory on the internet. (One useful site is. You’ll need flash for it to work).
Learning to read music for different instruments isn’t all that hard. Once you’ve learned how to read even just the treble clef, you’re set for a ton of instruments, but of course, you’ll want to know the bass clef, too. The hard part is figuring out the fingering for the different notes, because it greatly differs between instruments. (If you want to do drums, you need to learn a different notation).
