    top number refers to number of beats in measure
    bottom number refers to which note gets the beat

    a time signature is a key to understand the sheet of music in front of you.

    time signatures are that thing at the front of the first bar in music, usually looks like a fraction sign. the lower number indicates the note value which represents one beat (the “beat unit”);
    the upper number indicates how many such beats there are in a bar

    the first number is beats per measure

    so if it’s 3/4 there are three beats per measure

    the second number is what note gets the beat

    so most commonly if it’s a 4 a quarter note will be one beat. If it’s 8 a quarter note gets the beat if it’s 2 a half note gets it, 1 a whole note, etc, etc

    ive been playing several instruments for 5 years and its stilll a little complicated for me butl the top number represents the amount of beats that can fit in the measure and the bottom represents how many parts are in each beat so if the time signature was 4/4 then there are 4 beats in a measure and a beat is made up of 4 parts. I hope it helps its hard to explain

    It helps you with the rythmn, how many beats to count to the bar or measure.
    so 4 over 4 , you would count 4 beats. One, two, three four, one two three four, rythmically. the value of the notes add up to the number.

    so you need to know the values of notes.

    Semibreve is worth 4
    minim 2
    crotchet 1
    etc…..
