It just takes lots of practice. It is very worthwhile to learn. Some say it is harmful to know how to read. That’s a big pile of nonsense.

    learning to read music

Hi! One of my classmates at music school did the following:

    1) he worked hard on his scales every day, and

    2) he spent a half hour every day forcing himself to read through a few pages of music without stopping…and he used a metrenome. At first he had to go slowly, but as he learned to read better, he was able to play more notes and faster. The key is to look at the key and time signatures first, then begin to play without stopping, even if it’s slow.

Take some music that is a little easier than what you normally work on, and practice sight-reading every day for a little bit. Try not to look at your hands while reading. Just keep going no matter how many notes you miss. If you want, you can go back and try a second time at the end. You will improve!

Please check the completed questions – I have responded to this numerous times, and I think I got BA for at least one of them.

You want to get better so you can perform for a ceratin someone? Hmmm ….. What’s her name?

Kindclarinetist gave some good advice. Let me add, before attempting to sight read anything, look at the music first. You must understand everything on the page. You wil not have time to figure out what note that is with all of those ledger lines. Figure out all those questionable areas before beginning.
