Right now I play guitar but can only read tabs. I’d like to learn to read music for guitar, and maybe so I can play some other instruments. The thing is I cannot read any music at all- and as for guitar I’m a beginner and self teaching. To learn to read music, should I just get some lessons, or is it possible to teach myself with relative ease?

When you learn to read music, no doubt eventually you’ll need to learn various musical forms. Here’s a lesson to help you in learning to read music with binary form.

Binary form has the sense of each smaller musical unit developing into a larger one. The opening motive initiates the first phrase then expands to the A section, and finally to the complete piece. We can sketch out binary form as:

||  :                                  A                                   :  ||

||  :                                 B                                       :  ||

Phrase 1                       Phrase 2

Phrase 3 Phrase 4 Optional phrases

Opening motif

Opening motif may appear with new or related material

We can represent binary form simply by its larger sections as well:

||:A:||:B:||

Another common musical form is ternary form. This form has a three part structure where a section of music is presented, followed by a contrasting section, then the original material is restated. This form is usually represented as:

A B A

The opening A section may have repeats, as well as the B section, but they are not necessary for the form. Composers may vary the final A section (A B A’), or more simply, at the end of the written B section, the performer is asked to go back to the beginning and play to the end of the A section.

GO TO: www.andrewwasson.com Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question… Q: First off, I’d like to state that, I am a decent guitarist with 16 years experience on guitar. I just watched your video on Constructing Chords on the Guitar Neck where you had mentioned that music reading is an important element for learning fret-board notes and music’s various rhythms! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve tried to discipline myself to begin learning to read music on the guitar. And, in the end, I have always abandoned it. I’ve purchased books like; the Hal Leonard Guitar Method Book 1, Classical Guitar for Beginners, and another one called Play Guitar Today. These books were so dumb and boring that I just could not find any motivation to study from them. My question would be; Is it possible for a somewhat established player to actually go backwards and learn a fundamental rudiment like music reading? And, have you got any music reading study tips. Thanks BTW – for your incredible guitar lessons! Bill, Rhode Island – USA A: When it comes to learning music reading I think it can be summed up with three points… #1. Make a decision that you are going to learn to read — and stick to it through thick and thin. #2. Realize that most of the books out there are not great, and only a few will work as good supplements to …

When learning how to read music, meter is no doubt one of the first lessons you’ll need to learn, in the next few posts we’re going to be learning about simple and compound time…

A main feature of western music is its meter, a repeating pattern of pulses with a regular accent pattern.

Music has three different meters: duple time, triple time, and quadruple time. The names of these meters reflect the number of pulses or beats in each measure of music: duple time tells us that the meter has two pulses per measure, triple time has three, and quadruple time has four pulses per measure.

For each of these meters there is also a basic accent pattern. Duple time has a strong-weak pattern, a triple meter usually has a strong-weak-weak pattern, and quadruple meter has a strong-weak-medium weak pattern for each measure. There are variations to these accent patterns for specific genres or styles, or occasionally composers will play with our expectations of these meters, but for our purposes here, we shall stick with these basic patterns.

Just getting over a cold so not my normal voice. I should have said in the video that the base notes are played with the left hand. When I started to learn guitar. I was told, “Oh you don’t want to learn to read music” Well , Yes I do. I did learn to at school about 60 years ago. Some of it I remember. It was never put to use, not even at school. No instruments them days. I have done the same thing for Guitar and Ukulele and do them all in sequence. Playing, sort of, many simple pieces. If there are TABS I tend to play to them. I will have to blank them out if I am going to be able to look at the music and play the note with out thinking.

The Official Website of DreidMusicalX dreidmusicalx.webs.com Findtabs for many of my originals and cover songs that I play on and off You Tube. Download my music free! You can also get line 6 Tones and details of the tones I create for these videos free on my new website. Plus much more! Join Now! Its free! This is by request of so many out there! And yes it is a pain to show someone how to do this on video. lol! Dont take it personal though I said that people. It was just fustrating to slow it it down for me to show someone else who’s learning it. So the pain was really only mine? HaHa! I know im not that good with viedo lessons about piecing them together to make them perfect? I get the point accross and hope it helps people? I do like helping our younger musicians, and friends out when I have the time to do it. The best advise I can give a musician is to learn to read music, and get books to learn from instead of these guitar tabs online. 99% of the time they are wrong! Then you learn the song wrong then teach others wrong. There is always something you will leave out or play wrong from these tabs online. Always! Unless some one has copied them from a guitar book that is? When ever I can! I will always learn it from a book. I know there not cheap, but try ebay, I have gotten books really cheap there under $10.00 and its worth you learning correctly! I do this song by ear only (No Online tabs) It should be very close! But do get a book if you can ever find one? I have …
