It was a radio interview and a caller asked a question, basically, “Why do we still teach people how to read music the old slow way that hasn’t changed in at least 200 years??”

The speaker essentially said, “yes there are faster ways to learn to read music, but it’s important to still study classical music” (which I agree with by the way), but she didn’t even answer the question!! If there’s a faster way to teach people how to read music it needs to be taught. I’ve been saying this for years and FINALLY it sounds like people are starting to listen. Music theory, learning to read music, and fundamental music education don’t have to be antiquated, but they are in the normal ways music are taught. I’m just starting to learn to play piano. I am trying diligently to learn how to translate the notes on the sheet music to the keys on the piano; however, by the time I figure out what the sheet music says, and get used to physically playing it, I’ve memorized the piece. I feel like this doesn’t facilitate my ability to read and interpret the music efficiently; it seems like I’m just jumping from barely deciphering the notes to simply reciting from memory. Is this a bad approach? What strategy can I take to improve?
