Howdy! (I’m from Texas, what can I say..?)

Ok so if you want to learn to read music, how much should you pratice? I’ve heard alot of different answers and too many of them are just plain wrong so I thought I’d tell you my opinion.

First, you’ve got to make that you’re using exercises designed to teach you to begin thinking musically, not just memorizing lines and spaces… We’ve all done it, it just doesn’t work long term… you’ll only be a slow music reader that way. Also, you want to make sure you’re using exercises designed to help you learn to read music FAST. Anyone can learn to read music eventually, but if you don’t want it to take months and years like it takes most people you need to use a program designed for speed. (of course if you’ve already invested in Speedy Music Reading, you’ve got both of these covered… if you haven’t yet, what are you waiting on?)

So once you’ve got those covered you can begin practicing. You should practice 15-20 minutes a day, no more. It’s easy to feel really motivated one and study for an hour or two, but you’re not doing yourself any favors. Study 15-20 minutes per day as close to every day as possible, your results will be infinately better than if you do hours of study a few times per week. Hope this helps!

Well it’s September the 1st and most high school students are back in school. As students are getting back into the swing of school and ambitions of academic grandeur are refreshed, many students and parents are thinking about how to advance for a musically gifted students.

For students in music classes and who have any musical ambitions after highschool, it’s critical to learn how to read music notes before graduation. I myself was a music major in college but could not read music when I went off to college. It was a horrible mistake. In my music theory, musicianship and music education classes I was fighting my entire first year to make up for lost time.

Parents, if you want your kids to accel in college and they’re even considering a music major or even taking music classes, help them learn how to read music notes and basic music theory. There are a number of good programs, if you want something offline the Composer is pretty good. If you want something online that you can help them get started on immediately and that guarantees success, check out Speedy Music Reading

Today’s music lesson is on learning how to read music with triads and it also contains some great tips for people who want to learn how to sight read music.

A triad is a three-note chord that can be stacked in thirds. The pieces of the chords, from lowest to highest on a staff) are called the Root, the Third (whose interval is a major third or minor third above the root) and the Fifth (whose interval is a major or minor third above the third, and a diminished, perfect, or augmented fifth above the root).

Triads (or any other tertian chords) are built by stacking every other note. For example, A-C-E is a triad and it skips B and D. While the interval from each note to the one above it is a third, the quality of those thirds varies depending on the quality of the triad… More to come on this later.
